Dynamo 3-1 South Normanton Atheltic
Next up for the First Team was the visit of league leaders, South Normanton Athletic, after the original game was abandoned back in September after 70mins due to lightning strikes. Will Dean continued in goal, Peverley returned to midfield to partner Jones and Nkrumah replaced Muir in attack.
The game started at a frantic pace with the opposition goalkeeper putting the pressure on the home defence at every opportunity, with his long kicks and the away teams tactic of getting the ball early to their lively right winger. Ironically, the opening goal came from Dynamos 16 year-old shot-stopper’s long kick to Withers, who recycled the ball out to Griffiths, he in turn found Peverley in the space centrally, and his deep pass to Goody was clinically volleyed home from a tight angle. A quite brilliant strike to open the scoring. Dean, once again as in previous weeks, was in fine form when called upon to deny the away number 7 from long range.
It was nearly 2 just before half-time, as Goodband megged the home full-back and squared for Withers, but the away left-back made a vital block. Half-time 1-0.
The feeling at the interval was that we needed another goal, with the away side having an embarrassment of riches on the bench we knew they would come out at us.
Within 90 seconds of the restart, the hosts had doubled their lead. Withers and Nkrumah combined well down the right for a cross to be volleyed home by Goodband for his second of the match and 22nd of the season.
It was dreamland 5 minutes later, when a 3-goal lead was secured. The ball was won in the centre of the park and Macca played a superb ball through to Goodband who squared to Griffiths to bag his 19th goal of the season. Still 40 minutes to play, could the title favourites find a way back into it?
Dynamo made their first change of the match with Walmsley replacing Brown. It wasn’t quite the Alamo, but South Normanton certainly piled the pressure on and Dean had to be on hand to keep them at bay. Dynamo occasionally had some counter attack chances, but the pressure was now coming from the away side. They reduced the arrears on 75 minutes and Dynamo made their last 3 changes Muir, Moore and Bickerton replaced Nkrumah, Griffiths and Withers.
It seemed like an eternity, the home side defence stood firm with Dawson and Bodill putting in some big blocks, Peverley and Jones in front of them were combative all afternoon against a side who don’t mind mixing it. The referee blew up after just 3 minutes of stoppage time and a huge 3 points was secured. Dynamo 3-1 South Normanton.
All-in-all a great team effort and a well deserved 3 points, some would say even more deserved after leading the original game 3-2 at the time of the abandonment.
Onto this week now, and Holbrook Sports are the visitors to Cockshut Lane.
