Left It Late

Melbourne Dynamo 4-3 Teversal

Dramatic end seals all 3 points.

After back-to-back defeats in the cup and league, the lads were back in action at home to bottom side Teversal. Five changes from the midweek defeat at South Normanton as Dean replaced Cox in goal, Brown, Peverley, Bickerton and Muir all came in for O’Brien, Jones, Griffiths and the injured Nkumrah.

The game started at a slow pace, neither side could get the ball down on a hard surface and it became scrappy at best. The first goal came against the run of play as long ball forward wasn’t dealt with and the away striker did well to keep the ball alive and laid it back for Rocco Hardy to expertly finish from 30 yards. A wake up call was needed, and it came with a good move started on the left by Olly Brown, he cut inside to find Bickerton who pass inside the full back set Withers free, his low cross was turned home by Muir for the equaliser. Now at 1-1 could we push on? The answer was no, as once again the ball was turned over and a long ball not dealt with. Dillon Gregory turned well and hit a shot off the under side of the bar for 2-1 Teversal. Once again, Dynamos were chasing the game and right on the stroke of half-time parity was restored. Goodband was released down the left and his cross-come-shot was turned into his home net by the away left back for 2-2 at half time.

Into the second half and the feeling was get the next goal and there would only be one winner. The bottom side Teversal had other ideas. Dynamo went to sleep from a throw-in and left the away number 4 in acres of space. To his credit he’s hit an unbelievable cross-field pass that has caught both Dean and Brown out and Kurtis Bamford looped a well-placed header over Dean to put Tevie in front for third time.

Changes were made as Jones and Griffiths replaced Peverley and Bickerton. Within 5 minutes Dynamo thought they had levelled, as a corner came out to Goodband who unleashed a powerful shot past the keeper, only for the linesman to raise his flag that the corner had gone out of play. The final change was made as Shadbolt came on for Muir with 20 minutes remaining.

Dynamo were now really pushing for the equaliser and Withers had two great opportunities. Into added time and it looked as if all was lost, how wrong could we be? Griffiths worked the space well and squared for Hughes to run onto the ball, the right back then unleashed a fierce low drive to the keepers right for 3-3!

The lads weren’t done yet and sensed the winner as the clocked ticked to 90+6’ Macca floated a free kick in from the right and skipper for the day, Bodill, rose at the back stick to nod the winner and get the 3 points.

A really tough afternoon where we never got going. The away side will deem themselves unlucky, but in all honestly they created very little and it was the home side with all the chances. An off day but we kept going and got the win. One things for sure we’ll have to be better in the next match. A small matter of the Derbyshire Cup final.
