Derby Singh Brothers 3-2 Melbourne Dynamo
A disappointing second half sees a first away defeat of the season.
The lads went into the short trip away to Derby Singh looking to get back to winning ways after the 1-1 draw at Mansfield Hosiery Mills last time out. Into the side came Gosling and Bickerton for Griffiths (away) and Supple who was on the bench. He was joined there by the returning Hughes from injury, Smith, Nkrumah and Holmes
The game started in a positive manner, as a mistake at the back from the Singh CB allowed Goodband to nip in and lift the ball over the home keeper for 1-0 to the away side. We now looked comfortable, but that was undone as a ball down the left wasn’t dealt with and the tricky Singh winger had a first-time shot that caught Cox out at his near post.
The lively Singh wingers were causing problems all afternoon but it was the away side who got the next goal. The ball was worked well down the left and into Withers, last seasons top scorer unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top left-hand corner for Dynamo to take a 2-1 lead into half time.
The first 15 minutes of the second half saw Singh come more into the game and Dynamos inability to keep the ball created too many quick turnovers, which the away side seem to capitalise on. Another such phase led to the equaliser; Dynamo well placed in the inside left channel surrendered possession when looking for the killer ball and Singh quickly counter attacked with the right winger cutting inside and firing in the bottom left-hand corner. Smith and Holmes were introduced for Bickerton and Trivett.
As Dynamo pushed to regain the lead again a turnover ball cost them, Singh won the ball back in their own half and a first-time through-ball put their striker in on goal and he took it around Cox to put the ball into an empty net.
3-2 behind and all to do to get back in the game. Somehow this didn’t happen as Bodill’s low shot was saved by the keeper and Withers follow-up somehow stayed out.
Supple, Hughes and Nkrumah were introduced as we pushed for the equaliser. Despite several balls into the box we couldn’t find a way through and the lads fell to a second defeat of the season.
We need to get back to basics and cut the mistakes out if we are to replicate the form showed in early August.
Next up is a Derbyshire Cup last 16 game on November 9th at home to Sleetmoor United.
